Do I Need Local Search Optimization For My Business?

Recently GetListed.org estimated that there are over two billion unique local searches per month on Google from just desktop computers in the United States. PewInternet.org recently added to this by reviewing the usage of the companion to desktop local search: mobile internet usage. They noted that:

For Small Businesses, SEO is the Way to Go

A recent survey from a lead-gen company MerchantCircle/Reply.com has shown that Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is what small businesses find to be the most important marketing channel over traditional and social media. If you take a step back and think about it, it's pretty easy to see why this might be the case.

Last Thursday 2/24/11, Google announced changes to its search formula to push low-quality sites lower in search rankings (those that are of low content value, copy content from other websites, and/or don't provide any new/fresh information to the audience). Word is that the new formula will affect 11.8% of search queries. Unlike numerous former changes, this time Google claims the changes would be hard not to notice.
